Mail down and up!
Today some of you had POP email issues - see below why, in the alert from the data center. BTW, whenever POP mail down you may go get your mail thru the webmail here: http://webmail.yourdomain.com
And now the update from the hardware team:
Just a fast update to let people know what is going on with email: 1. The ongoing network issues are still having some effect but it should have minimal impact on mail (meaning you may see a bit of slowdown or have a connection drop on occasion but nothing persistant due to this). 2. We have added extra servers to the spunky cluster (so if you have users on the machine ’spork’ you should see an improvement in speed and a reduction in connection errors). We added a total of four yesterday and one today. 3. We just corrected some load issues on looney (mailboxes on smaug) which were causing slowness and connectivity problems. Note: we are keeping an eye out for any further issues related to items 2 and 3 as we want mail running as smoothly as it possibly can - we’ll make additional adjustments if needed! 4. We are in the process of upgrading our mail database server - we have it worked out so that this will cause minimal impact on our customers. The only noticeable effect (other than better performance once it is completed) will be delays in updates you make through the panel to mail services and this will be brief (for example setting up a new email address right when we are changing the database that stores your aliases will have to wait until the move is done as you cannot write and move or new data will be lost - the delay should be no more an hour). 5. We are currently fixing an issue that is causing intermittent password failures and will update this post as soon as that is corrected (we don’t anticipate this to take much longer). Update on this last one, 1:30pm PDT: The new mailmachines we added yesterday to ease the load on the existing ones weren’t authenticating as expected - only those using their email address as username were affected. The reason for the inconsistent login success/failures is that when you are accessing the mail server you could be using any of the ones assigned to your mail cluster, and if you happened to reach one of the new ones, login failed. This is now fixed. mir Wed, 09 Aug 2006 19:28:59 +0000
